Pie Sisters

3 Mar

Between places like Georgetown Cupcake, Sprinkles, Baked & Wired, and now Pie Sisters, the Georgetown area seems to be making a name for itself as the dessert hubbub of DC.

As anyone who knows me well will tell you, cake, cupcakes, or anything with frosting is my thing…but pie?? Mehh, not so much. However, since I’ve been hearing rave reviews about Pie Sisters from several of my Georgetown U peers, I decided to trek over to the small M Street store to see what the buzz was all about.

I absolutely love the entrepreneurial story surrounding this place. It was started by three sisters in the fall of 2010, who were previously living in separate areas of the country and who were pursuing different careers. However, their love for pie-making, which was a tradition for them growing up, brought them back together.

The presentation of their pies is an art form in itself as you can see from the pictures above and below. I got the chocolate cream and apple pie cuppies per the recommendation of a Pie Sister’s employee. (FYI – Cuppies are essentiallyΒ  individual-sized portions). Both were delicious. The chocolate cream pie was light and airy and the chocolate itself was divine! This apple pie is the best I’ve had in my entire life, no joke. The amount of cinnamon used gave it the punch it needed without going overboard.

The store is conveniently located on M Street, almost a straight shot off the Key Bridge and is definitely a must-go if you’re a pie lover or just a dessert lover in general. I cannot wait to come back in summer to try out their berry-filled pies. I’d highly recommend Pie Sisters to anyone and everyone!

Where: 3423 M St. NW, Washington, DC 20007; Hours: 11am-7pm Tuesday-Sunday; Prices: Cuppies – $4, 7” pie – $14, 7” specialty pie – $16, 9” pie – $35, 9” specialty pie – $37. Go to the Pie Sister’s website for more details.

The Buzz About Buzz Bakery

14 Dec

The Cookie Monster Cupcake πŸ™‚

As of yesterday, I officially finished my first semester of grad school at Georgetown! I could not be more excited to have a three week winter break ahead of me and decided the best way to celebrate was with a cupcake. πŸ™‚ My friend Emily has been raving about a bakery in Arlington (located in Ballston) called Buzz Bakery & Lounge for months so I decided to try it out.

The first thing I noticed when I walked in was how cute this store was. They have a huge U-shaped counter in the middle of the store and tons of cute modern furniture and some very snazzy light fixtures I might add! There was a ton of seating room too, which really sets this place apart from most bakeries I’ve visited.

Ordering here is no easy feat since everything looks amazing (see the picture of the display case below if you need proof!). So after much deliberation I decided to order the cookie monster cupcake. It’s one of their signature cupcakes and I can see why. The actual cake tasted more like a chocolate chip muffin rather than cupcake but it was a difference I decided I actually liked. The icing is whipped to perfection and has little itsy bitsy pieces of cookie crumbs in it. Also it has cookie dough in the middle and a small cookie garnish it on top.

Yeahhh I don't think any dessert choice could be a bad one here. πŸ˜‰

While I wish I could have tried more, don’t fret….I will certainly go back and try something different. I know I’m a sucker for cupcakes but if that’s not your thing they have plenty of other options as well such as pies, tarts, cookies, brownies, plated desserts and cakes. They are also extremely well-known for their breakfast selection. In fact, the Washington Post said they have the best breakfast sandwiches in town. Stop on in and see if you agree with the Post!

In addition to the Ballston location, they also have a store in Alexandria if that’s closer to you. πŸ™‚

Could this storefront be any cuter?? Yeah, I don't think so.

Sooo cute!

Firehook Bakery

Pumpkin Cupcake

With it being less than a week away from Thanksgiving, I made it my mission to get something seasonal. I’ve been craving pumpkin everything recently and wanted something to celebrate one of my favorite upcoming holidays. With that in mind, I trekked out to Dupont Circle to a bakery I’ve heard some rave reviews about…Firehook Bakery. Firehook has locations all over DC and the DC area.

Maybe it was my high expectations but the pumpkin cupcake wasn’t anything special. The cake was pretty dry; however, if it hadn’t been I think this would have been a pretty good cupcake. The frosting was delicious – creamy and rich.

The seven-layer bar on the other hand was pure heaven. It has a graham cracker crust topped with chocolate and butterscotch chips and pecan and coconut shavings. There’s a lot going on with this dessert bar – it’s rich but the blend of ingredients is pure perfection.

They also serve cookies, pies and tarts. In addition to the chocolately goodness that this place serves up, they also have breakfast and lunch items. Can’t wait to go back for breakfast here at some point in the near future! πŸ™‚

Baked and Wired

The Tessita cupcake

Located in Georgetown, Baked & Wired is found a stone’s throw away from the chaotic hubbub of M Street. You can find it between 30th and 31st on the charming street of Thomas Jefferson. The motto of this place is “get baked”. Pretty witty if you ask me. πŸ™‚ This bakery/coffee shop has plenty of room for sitting and enjoying your drug of choice…coffee or dessert. And if you can’t decide between dessert and coffee there are plenty of desserts injected with a jolt of mocha to give you that caffeine fix you’re looking for.

Get Baked– Baked & Wired doesn’t discriminate when it comes to dessert. In fact, it houses almost anything sweet you can imagine. They have dessert bars, breakfast bars, coffee cakes, brownies, cakes, cookies, cupcakes, muffins, pie, sandwich cookies, and scones. Basically, it’s a sweet lover’s dream come true. They also have hippie crack (noooo, not what you’re thinking people…it’s granola!) and quiches.

O.M.G. bar

While I was here, I tried two items: an o.m.g bar and the tessita cupcake. The o.m.g. bar has certainly earned its name. It’ll have you singing that Usher song in your head (or maybe even out loud) before you’re done. This dessert bar has a graham cracker crust and is layered with homemade caramel, marshmallow and chocolate glaze. I will definitely being coming back for this amazing creation! The equally delicious tessita cupcake has vanilla cake with dulce de leche filling and chocolate-hazelnut satin icing. Yum, yum, yum!

But Baked & Wired is not just known for its sugary goodness. It’s also known for its coffee…hence the word ‘wired’ in its name.

Get Wired – They offer expressos, macchiatos, lattes, mochas and several other caffeine-infused options. While a sugar fix is more my drug of choice, I noticed plenty people lined up for a caffeine fix as well.

Need something for the pooch? Baked & Wired offers options for your loveable furball. These doggie treats are available in five flavors and include: bacon and cheese, BBQ kitty riplets, chicken and cheese, minty fresh breath and PB crunch. Puppies need yummy goodies too!

There’s a dessert app for that

Trolling around on my iPhone this week I discovered that two of my favorite dessert places have apps which is super exciting! And on top of that they’re my favorite four letter word…FREE!

You can also purchase a gift certificate for 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 or 12 cupcakes and send via email. Gift certificates can be redeemed at any of the store locations. You can also share your favorite cupcakes on Twitter. You can find a few reviews of the app here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/crumbs/id419435030?mt=8

Sprinkles cupcake app

Β With the Sprinkles cupcakes app dishes out free cupcakes, one-click menu access, virtual cupcakes gifting , a memory game and a bakery locator. On top that that, Sprinkles bakes a limited supply of free cupcakes per day. Beat out other Sprinkles addicts by being the first to uncover our whisper words in this app’s alerts. The Sweet Lobby

2 Nov

The Sweet Lobby is tucked away on a cute side street in Capitol Hill and is easily accessible via the orange line – Eastern Market stop. The shop itself is tiny and is really only meant for to-go orders. And by tiny I mean there’s really only room for the line that forms for to-go orders. The store seems to have many regulars and I received some good recommendations from the lady behind me in line. Because this shop is known for its macaroons I tried two – the PB&J flavor as well as the hazelnut praline salted caramel. I figured the PB&J flavor would either great or terrible but I wanted to try something a little different. I’m glad I tried it though since it was delicious! It was similar to a peanut butter cookie with grape jelly sandwiched in the middle. While that one was pretty amazing, the hazelnut praline salted caramel was hands down the better of the two. It was light and airy and had hazelnut and praline shavings sprinkled on top. I do have to say that I’ve never been a fan of macaroons until now! I can see why this place is know for their macaroons…they are definitely this shop’s best product.

The cupcake I had was also very good as well. The chocolate salted caramel is a chocolate cupcake which is dipped in dark chocolate ganache, filled with house-made salted caramel and topped with milk chocolate buttercream and a salted caramel swirl. The center of the cupcake was the best part. I have never seen or heard of a cupcake like it. What I enjoyed most about their cupcake collection was the variety. They had unique cupcake flavors such as bananas foster, pumpkin spice, mango cream, chocolate caramel crunch, Boston creme, sticky toffee and pineapple ‘inside out’ cake.

Even though I’ve been raving about this shop, I do have one warning. They will charge you 50 cents extra if you get a cupcake box that only holds one cupcake. However, this is the only box they change extra.

The shop also offers shortbread, madelines, mendiants, looseleaf tea and European style hot chocolate. This little shop is a gem! I’d certainly recommend going for anyone who likes uniquely flavored cupcakes or is a fan of macaroons.

Sprinkles Cupcakes DC – Love it!

10 Oct

Saturday was gorgeous in DC. It was sunny, mild and slightly breezy. That morning I stepped onto my porch, sat down in my chair and sipped slowly on hot tea. At that moment, I decided it was a perfect day for a long walk AND a cupcake of course. And today I was going to earn my cupcake! I put on a good pair of walking shoes and trekked out to Georgetown – a good 50 minute walk – just one way.

I had to smile to myself as a walked down M Street and saw a veryyy long line, stretched as far as the eye can see at Georgetown Cupcake. Thank goodness I was headed somewhere else! I was heading to the store of Georgetown Cupcake’s arch rival…Sprinkles Cupcakes. Dun, dun, dun! πŸ˜‰

The store itself is very small but clean, inviting and cute. My dad ordered the milk chocolate cupcake and I order the chocolate marshmallow. I have to say that after trying his I had serious cupcake envy, since that’s all he was willing to share. πŸ™‚ The icing to cake ratio on his was perfect and the cake wasn’t overly dry or soft. The chocolate marshmallow on the other hand was a fairly dry and could have used more icing. The marshmallow center was absolutely delicious though! Truth be told – I’ve been here before but BEFORE I started the blog. I can tell you that the girls I went with (my absolute bestie and her sister) said these were some of the best cupcakes they’ve ever had. On that particular trip I had the peanut butter cupcake and it was simply to die for…much similar in quality to the milk chocolate one! I will definitely be making a cupcake trip back to M Street…but only to one store which is? Drum roll please!…………..

………..Sprinkles Cupcakes. I give their cupcakes an A! I’m excited to see continued success from this company. πŸ™‚ Tune into Cupcake Wars on the Food Network to see Sprinkles Cupcake founder Candace Nelson who helps judge the show.

[FYI – As some of you may know, many cupcake shops have pink cupcakes this month in honor of breast cancer awareness month. I would encourage you to buy one as a portion of your cupcake cost will go directly to research. Tune in later this week when I give a list of some of those cupcake places! ]
